What is Continuum?
- A validated, computer guided ASAM Criteria, 3rd edition assessment software for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring conditions
- Conducts a comprehensive biopsychosocial patient risk and needs assessment across all six ASAM Criteria, 3rd edition dimensions
- Determines the least intensive, but safe and appropriate ASAM Criteria, 3rd edition level of care recommendation, as well as treatment planning considerations
- Designed to be appropriate for all members of the clinical care team to administer, including clinicians, counselors and medical staff
Continuum Features
With this assessment, clinicians can easily:
- Launch Continuum assessment directly from your EHR system
- Conduct an assessment in alignment with The ASAM Criteria guidelines
- Generate comprehensive patient reports that include DSM-5-TR SUD diagnoses, severity and imminent risks, as well as recommended level of care placement
- Obtain ASI composite scores, as well as CIWA and CINA scores for withdrawal
- Easily reassess patients directly from their previous Continuum or Co-Triage assessments
Research shows treatment matching with the Continuum is associated with:
- 30% better patient retention rates at 3 months
- Improved patient engagement
- 2–3 times better multidimensional outcomes at 3 months
- Lower substance use disorder severity
- Lower hospital utilization
- 25% fewer no-shows
Use of the ASAM CONTINUUM is associated with a range of benefits for:

Reports
After completion of the assessment, Continuum will generate two comprehensive reports: the Summary and Narrative Reports.
| Summary Report | Narrative Report |
|---|---|
|
The Continuum Summary Report contains biopsychosocial diagnostic information regarding the patient's substance use, co-occurring considerations and the final level of care recommendation. This includes: • DSM-5-TR SUD diagnoses • ASI composite scores • CIWA and CINA withdrawal scores and presence of imminent withdrawal risk • Patient critical issues that should be addressed immediately to meet the patient's needs • Access to treatment barriers • ASAM Criteria dimensional analysis across all six dimensions |
The Continuum Narrative Report generates an automated summary of the patient's condition across the six ASAM Criteria dimensions to assist with treatment planning. This includes: • Current presentation • Relevant biopsychosocial history • Patient and provider perception of problems and need for treatment • ASI Composite scores • Patient problem list across the six ASAM Criteria dimensions |
How Continuum and Co-Triage Work Together
Both tools assess individuals with substance use and co-occurring conditions and can identify ASAM dimensional needs that require immediate medical attention, including any withdrawal management, co-occurring or bio-medical enhanced services. Co-Triage is a provisional referral tool that broadly assesses treatment needs to generate an initial patient placement recommendation and directs patients to a preliminary level of care where they can receive a comprehensive ASAM Criteria assessment. Continuum is a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment tool that determines patient risk and needs to accurately generate a recommendation for the least intensive and most appropriate level of care.
